Health and Recovery Time for Breast Augmentation

The recovery time for breast augmentation greatly depends on how closely the post-operative instructions are followed. Your breast surgeon will give you specific instructions on how to care for yourself following your breast augmentation surgery. You will want to avoid heavy lifting and other strenuous activities such as exercising for the first two weeks during recovery. There are other factors that help determine the recovery time for breast augmentation surgery. Some of these factors include:

  • How well you follow the post-operative instructions
  • Placement of the breast implants
  • Placement of the incision

Breast Augmentation Recovery Time

Breast augmentation recovery time can take anywhere from three to six months. The first couple of days are the most difficult. During these days, you will have pain medication to help control any discomfort you may experience. You will wear dressings and gauze over your breasts to protect your incisions and keep your breasts from moving. You will be instructed to change these dressings daily and to avoid taking baths. Sitting in a bath may increase the risk of infection. Taking showers will ensure that the incisions are cleaned without the risk of infection.

You will want to have someone stay with you for a few days to help you around the house. If you have children, you will want someone to take care of them during these initials days so you can focus on resting and recovering.

After the first couple of days, your breast surgeon will remove the dressings and give you a surgical bra to wear for a few weeks. This bra will keep your breasts from moving and provide you the needed support for comfort and recovery.

You may return to work after the first week as long as your work does not require any heavy lifting or strenuous activity. Your breasts may be swollen for about three months. The swelling will be completely gone after a few months and your breasts will be completely recovered after six months.

Placement Options for Breast Implants

The placement you choose for breast implants affects the recovery time. There are two placement options.

  • Submuscular placement
  • Subglandular placement

Recovery time is longer with submuscular placement because the breast implants are placed below the muscle in the chest. This is a deeper placement and requires a deeper incision. Recovery time is shorter with subglandular placement because the breast implants are placed above the muscle.

Breast Augmentation Incision Placement Options and Recovery

You have three choices for incision placement.

  • Inframammary
  • Periareolar
  • Transaxillary

The inframammary incision is the most common and is placed under the breast where the breast meets the chest. This incision is longer than the other two types and requires a little a little more time for recovery.

The periareolar incision is smaller then the inframammary incision and is placed where the areola meets the skin of the breast. This incision takes roughly the same amount of time for recovery as the inframammary.

The transaxillary incision is a shorter incision and is placed under the arm. This incision takes the least amount of time for recovery because it is not as deep.
