Abdominoplasty: What to Expect and Recovery

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure to help flatten your lower abdomen, love handles, and upper abdomen.  A tummy tuck can be adjusted somewhat to suit your personal needs, but all tummy tucks are intended for individuals for whom regular exercise and healthy diet can not remove tummy bulges.

No plastic surgery procedure is intended as a replacement for a healthy lifestyle.  Rather, plastic surgery can supplement a healthy lifestyle and, in the case of abdominoplasty, remove excess skin created by weight loss or stretching.  There are different types of abdominoplasty which your plastic surgeon might recommend:

  • Traditional tummy tuck
  • Endoscopic tummy tuck
  • Mini tummy tuck

Traditional Tummy Tuck

A traditional tummy tuck uses incisions to remove excess skin and fat, and to pull lax muscles taut for a flat appearance to the abdomen.  Most candidates for abdominoplasty undergo a traditional tummy tuck.

Endoscopic Tummy Tuck

An endoscopic tummy tuck receives its name from the use of an endoscope which is inserted into the incisions to examine the muscles and tissue to be tightened.  This type of abdominoplasty uses more limited incisions, which will result in less scarring, though the recovery time may not necessarily be shorter than a traditional tummy tuck.  Not every abdominoplasty patient is a good candidate for an endoscopic tummy tuck.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck may be recommended for patients desiring abdominoplasty, but whose abdomen only suffers from slightly excess skin and fat.  Much like other “mini” plastic surgery procedures offered, the procedure is somewhat less invasive, but the results are also less noticeable.

Abdominoplasty for Men

In the past year, male plastic surgery procedures have been some of the fastest growing elective procedures in the US.  One of these procedures includes abdominoplasty for men.  The abdominoplasty procedures used on men are the same ones used on women, but the results may be remarkable.  Particularly in men who have a rigorous exercise program, but who have been unable to reduce excess skin and fat particularly in the lower abdomen, abdominoplasty can remove the layer of excess tissue and expose the definition of hard-earned abdominal muscles underneath.

Recovery after Abdominoplasty

The effects of plastic surgery procedures vary greatly from patient to patient.  No plastic surgery procedure can counteract the effects of a continuous poor diet and lack of exercise.  However, the outcome of your plastic surgery procedure relies heavily on how thoroughly you follow your plastic surgeon’s directions for recovery.

It is likely that you will be required to stay in a hospital overnight, and you will find it necessary to miss at least one week of work, even if you have a desk job.  Some patients find two weeks necessary before they are ready to return to work.  The stitches may be removed within a week of your surgery, but do not be fooled: Just because the stitches are out does not mean you are healed.  Full recovery will take several weeks.  Your doctor may recommend light exercise such as walking one week after surgery to help prevent blood clots and promote quicker healing.
